Guru Martini dapat dikatakan bertindak sebagai staf pengajar, kepala sekolah, juru-kunci dan pesuruh selama 8 tahun. Guru Martini tinggal di desa Semangit. Untuk pergi mengajar, Guru Martini harus melalui jalan sungai selama 8-12 jam, melewati 15 riam, termasuk Riam Pelanduk. Di riam tersebut, para penumpang perahu harus turun dan ikut mendorong perahu agar dapat melalui riam.<br /><br />M. Lizet, kepala dusun Badat Baru juga menyatakan kesulitan hidup di sana. Begitu juga Mantri Kusnadi yang sulit mendapatkan pasokan obat. Pasokan dari wilayah Indonesia dapat dikatakan hamper tidak mungkin. Satu-satunya cara adalah mendapatkan pasokan dari wilayah Malaysia. Sehingga di sana banyak terdapat pelintas batas tradisional. Di dusun Sapit, pala pelintas batas tersebut bertemu untuk saling menukar atau berbelanja.<br /><br />Shelly adalah adik M. Lizet yang telah menikah dengan warga Malaysia dan tinggal di Kuching. Secara materi dan fisik, kehidupannya jauh lebih nyaman.
